This Homemade prerunner is something our resident fabricator is best at. No detailed CAD drawings, no project time restrictions, just a couple of guys looking at the pre bent steel tube saying this would look good, and this will make it better.
James has made some pre runners in the past for his Dodge and Rubicon, and With Steves help have made a good design. Now made a little stronger with less steel, we came up with a prerunner that looks good on Project X.
First we start off with some pre bent steel James had laying around the garage from his last prerunner project. Good thing he didn’t think of something else to do with it.
We needed to make the mounting tabs for the prerunner so we cut two thick pieces of steel for our mounting brackets.
Then we placed them where they were going to be mounted and marked our holes. Using the drill press we drilled a 3/8” hole in each of them and found two bolts to fit. We then took the bumper off to remove the rubber bump stops on the front.
Once we positioned the prerunner where we wanted it James was able to tack weld the tube steel to the mounting brackets. We would also be welding to the stock tow hooks for more stability. With out doing this the stock bumper would flex and thus fail when it was needed. This made it very strong.
Here is a picture of the prerunner tacked into place, notice that there is enough room to still get to the winch and this keeps things from hitting it. We seen that the winch plate had an “X” cut into it and decided since this is “Project X” lets highlight this with some Yellow paint.
Now this picture is how it should have turned out, the garage is still filled with smoke from welding. This picture will give you an Idea of how it will look when finished. I will be using POR 15 to paint the prerunner so we need to let it flash rust for a couple of days first before finish painting it. Then I will add a top coat of Herculiner to give it that finished look.
Some Off-Roading places require you to run a flag on the front of your rig. So as a last minute addition we added this flag mounting tab to the prerunner.
This next picture shows what it will look like with a flag mounted. Again still a smoke filled shot.
I will post pictures of the finished painted product when it is done.
